Plan the canister before you take the CC: walk in from lines where Goes Where He Pleases drops back toward you or along your run path, because reclaiming it is what turns the first root or hook into a green light instead of a tax.
Treat W-R-W as one Mundo pattern, not three separate buttons—W the burst, R after your health really moves, then recast W while you are still in contact—because that is how the giant health bar actually shows up in fights.
Pre-6 ganks are a Q honesty test: if the lane cannot keep someone in front of your body after cleaver, keep clearing, because Mundo gets paid for arriving to the real game on schedule and his recent results stay strong once games stretch even if the first ten minutes were only decent.
Press R once the fight has actually committed and your health bar has moved enough to make the healing matter, usually after W has started soaking real damage rather than before anyone has spent on you. If you ult on first contact, you often spend the speed and healing while the enemy is still backing away or holding cooldowns, and then the dangerous part of the fight starts after your best window is already rolling. The exception is when you need the move speed immediately to stay on a target you have already tagged with Q and you know the fight will stay connected. In most normal fights, W first, R after the burst lands, then recast W during contact.
